Yesteryear

WHY AM I WATCHING YESTERYEAR?

In which Spock has an excellent adventure.

You have, and always shall be, my business associate.

The Enterprise crew is doing some historical studies at a totally random time vortex AND NOT THE GUARDIAN OF FOREVER, NO SIR! So, we've got Bones hanging out with some lady and A FUCKING GRIFFIN WITH A TRICORDER. If nothing else, this show gave us some fantastic looking characters. But when Kirk and Spock get back from their jaunt through the past, no one recognizes Spock! The ship even has a different first officer, an Andorian even! And look, I'm all for more aliens on this show, but couldn't we have replaced, oh I don't know, Chekov? But I'll get to that.

It turns out in this timeline, Spock died when he was a child. Spock remembers an incident happening to him when he was a kid, but his cousin saved his life. Using some pretty dubious logic, Kirk figures out that Spock's cousin was in fact Future Spock! And because he was mucking about in the past with Kirk, he couldn't go and muck about in his own past. Time travel, just go with it. And so, it's back down to the Guardian of Forever to restore the timeline.

Spock uses the Guardian to head back about 30 years and watches himself get beat up by some bullies. They don't like him because he's half human. Li'l Spock has a talk with his father and decides that he needs to head out into the desert for some sort of Vulcan right of passage. He brings his pet bear along. They're wandering through the desert when Battlecat attacks them. Luckily Old Spock is there to save the day. But Spock's pet was injured in the attack and needs a vet. So, Old Spock watches over the bear while Young Spock runs back to the city for help. He's almost eaten by a piranha plant, but he gets to the city relatively quickly. Unfortunately, the bear's injuries are too severe, and Li'l Spock makes the hard, but logical decision to put his pet to sleep. They return home and Sarek gets to have a nice moment with both of his son. Now that Young Spock has learned an important lesson about letting an older version of himself solve all his problems, Old Spock can leap back to the future, hoping that this leap is the one that takes him home. It does! We know this, because Bones is being weirdly racist to Vulcans again!  Ah, Gene's Wonderful Enlightened Future!

And let's not forget. A fucking griffin with a tricorder.
THE RANDOM THOUGHTS
  • For the time Harlan Ellison wrote a TV show, then cried about it for 50 years, see the TOS episode City on the Edge of Forever
  • For more Vulcan Boy Fights see Star Trek (2009)
  • This episode was written by D.C. Fontana, one of the main writers of the original Star Trek. She's also responsible for much of Spock's backstory. In addition, Sarek is played by Spock's actual dad Mark Lenard. Amanda was voiced by Star Trek mainstay Majel Barrett. More proof that they weren't trying to shit out a quick tie in cartoon, but make some good Star Trek.
Star Trek needs more Andorians.
